After years, Shakira may finally get justice from the Spanish court

Spain's Supreme Court has cleared Shakira of tax fraud charges and ordered the Spanish tax authority to refund her more than 60 million euros with interest. According to the panel, it was not proven that the Colombian singer spent at least 183 days in Spain in 2011 — the minimum required for the tax authority to apply the country's tax rules to her. Per the ruling, only 163 days could be verified.

The Spanish tax authority had previously imposed a 55-million-euro fine on Shakira. The prosecution can still challenge the decision at the Supreme Court, so the payment won't happen for now. The ruling applies only to the 2011 tax year — Shakira already settled her cases for 2012 through 2014 back in 2023 with an agreement with the Spanish prosecutor's office.

After being cleared, the singer sharply criticized having been treated as guilty for years, and suggested she had been the target of organized defamation and smear campaigns. The long legal battle has thus — at least in this case — been decided in Shakira's favor.
