Győri Audi ETO KC is supporting the fight against breast cancer by wearing pink shirts. The October initiative goes beyond sport: the club is using its profile and fan community to spread the message about the importance of breast screening and early detection to as many people as possible.
The campaign also includes charitable support. Sales of pink fan merchandise will help the Petz Aladár University Teaching Hospital, adding tangible local support to this symbolic gesture.
Turning attention from sport to protecting health
A popular sports club can bring a health message to audiences who might not otherwise encounter it through a traditional awareness campaign. The pink shirt is immediately noticeable in a match setting, starts conversations and provides an opportunity to focus attention on prevention and screening.
According to Nemzeti Sport's report, Edina Fata, managing director of Győri ETO Kft., stressed that strength is not only about fighting but also about looking after ourselves and attending health screenings. This idea is particularly well suited to a sporting environment where preparation, awareness and regular health assessments are part of everyday life.
Why discuss screening even without symptoms?
Breast cancer can be asymptomatic in its early stages, so screening is not solely intended to investigate a change that is already noticeable. According to the National Centre for Public Health and Pharmacy's information on breast screening, early detection is crucial because treatment started in time may offer a substantially better chance of recovery.
The same official guidance states that breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in Hungary. Around 8,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, and the disease is responsible for approximately 2,100–2,200 deaths. These figures show that this is a health issue affecting a broad section of society.
According to the National Centre for Public Health and Pharmacy, Hungary's organised public health breast screening programme covers mammograms every two years for women aged 45 to 65. Those invited should therefore read the information in their letter and contact the healthcare provider or their doctor if they have any questions.
Buying a pink shirt becomes local support
According to information from the Municipality of Győr, proceeds from pink T-shirts and shirts sold in the ETO KC Shop will be donated to the Petz Aladár University Teaching Hospital. The campaign therefore goes beyond raising awareness: purchases by supporters also serve a local healthcare cause.
Based on Sportsmarketing.hu's report, the funds will reach the institution through the Foundation for Győr Hospital. The two announcements therefore specify the beneficiary of the same donation and the method through which it will be transferred.
According to the selection available in the club's official online shop, the unprinted version of the pink fan shirt costs HUF 19,990, while the printed version costs HUF 22,490. In this case, a purchase is not only an expression of support for the team but also a contribution to the charitable cause.
Why can a leading sports club's health campaign work?
A sports club's community consists of more than just its players and coaching staff. Supporters, family members, local partners and the youth development environment together form a network through which an important message can spread quickly across multiple channels.
Wearing a special shirt during a match makes the cause visually recognisable. Buying the fan version also gives the public an opportunity not only to notice the campaign but to participate in it. Health prevention is therefore presented not as an abstract concept but as a shared commitment by a familiar community.
Another advantage of the initiative is that it promotes health awareness without resorting to fear. The emphasis is on paying attention, staying informed and the possibility of early detection. This may help the screening message remain in supporters' minds beyond the duration of the campaign.
The campaign's message in everyday life
The pink shirt itself is no substitute for screening, but it can serve as a reminder that looking after one's health is important even without symptoms. It is therefore worth finding out about invitations to organised screening and consulting a healthcare professional in the event of questions or uncertainty.
Mammography and the assessment of individual risk are medical matters. A doctor or the relevant screening centre can provide personalised information about the need for and frequency of examinations; this article offers general information and does not constitute medical advice.
Győri Audi ETO KC's initiative demonstrates how elite sport, community responsibility and support for local healthcare can come together. The pink shirt is a striking symbol, but the most important message is conscious attention: early detection can make a significant difference, so an invitation to screening should not be set aside.
