Hungary national team promotion chances fall

After the 0–0 against Northern Ireland, sports outlets citing Football Meets Data say Hungary's chances of winning their Nations League group have fallen sharply. The percentages are not a verdict, but they show clearly how much more important the remaining four rounds have become.

Hungary's national team promotion chances after the draw in Belfast

Hungary's national football team drew 0–0 away to Northern Ireland in Belfast in the UEFA Nations League B division. A point on the road is not necessarily a bad result in itself, yet the probability figures cited after the Belfast match still show that the chances of finishing top of the group and winning promotion have fallen noticeably. M4 Sport and NB1.hu, citing the Football Meets Data model, wrote that catching up is now a more realistic scenario for Hungary than controlling the group.

Where does the group stand now?

According to a report by 444, after two rounds Ukraine and Northern Ireland lead the group with 4 points each, while Hungary and Georgia follow with 1 point each. This means Hungary have yet to win either of their first two matches, so they already face the rest of the campaign from a slight disadvantage.

According to an earlier statement by the Hungarian Football Federation, the national team are in League B Group 2 with Ukraine, Georgia and Northern Ireland. In the four-team group, six rounds are played on a home-and-away basis, so Hungary still have four matches left to improve their position.

What do the latest probability figures say?

According to M4 Sport, after the draw in Belfast Football Meets Data put Hungary's chances of finishing top of the group at 7.4 per cent, and gave them a 27.8 per cent chance of securing second place. The same article also mentions an overall promotion chance of 16.5 per cent, while third place appears as the most likely finishing position at 34 per cent.

According to NB1.hu, in a later update the Football Meets Data figures were already showing a 7.1 per cent chance of winning the group and a 15.9 per cent chance of promotion. The difference between the two sets of figures is small, but even that shows that in the current situation a Hungarian first place would be more of an exception than the likely baseline scenario.

Why is the number not the same everywhere?

At first glance, it may seem confusing that some places show 7.4 per cent and others 7.1 per cent for the same question. The most obvious explanation is that the different articles did not cite the Football Meets Data figures at exactly the same moment in time, and in such a system a new result or recalculation can cause a small shift.

That does not change the main point: based on the quoted forecasts, Hungary's chances of finishing top of the group are currently clearly low. If 7.1 per cent appears in one place and 7.4 per cent in another, that is not a substantive contradiction, but rather a sign that probability models are updated continuously.

What does a chance of around 7 per cent actually mean?

Figures like these should not be treated as predictions. Simulations show in what share of possible scenarios, based on the current balance of strength, results and estimates, the team would finish in a given position.

So a figure of around 7 per cent does not mean Hungary will definitely miss out on first place, but rather that, based on the current state of play, it is a less likely outcome. From a Hungarian perspective, that roughly means that in the remaining four matches it will no longer be enough simply to stay in contention: results will be needed against direct rivals that can quickly reshape the balance of power in the group.

Ukraine have moved into the strongest position

NB1.hu, citing Football Meets Data, wrote that Ukraine have a 68.6 per cent chance of winning the group. That represents a very strong starting position after two rounds, especially given that Hungary currently have only one point.

This does not mean the group is already decided, but it does mean that the rhythm of the race currently favours the Ukrainians. From Hungary's point of view, that makes every upcoming match more important, especially those that can directly influence the battle for second place.

The lack of goals and the squad situation also matter

According to 444's report, Hungary also failed to score in Belfast, which means they are still without a goal after the first two rounds of this year's Nations League campaign. The same report mentions that Bendegúz Bolla was injured in the 33rd minute, while Roland Sallai and Barnabás Varga were unavailable.

These circumstances do not in themselves determine the chances in the next rounds with precision, but they do help explain the more restrained expectations. The effectiveness of the attack and the condition of the squad can matter especially much in a short group stage.

Why does this also matter for Euro 2028 qualifying?

This is not only about reaching League A. According to Origo Sport's analysis, Nations League finishing positions could affect the pot allocation for qualification for the 2028 European Championship, and could also matter in terms of play-off opportunities.

This matters because a more favourable pot allocation could later mean an easier qualifying draw. It would still be too early to treat the exact consequences as final, because there are still four rounds left in the group and the final order could still change for several teams.

Based on the current situation, Hungary's national team still have a way up, but after the draw in Belfast the margin for error has become much smaller. The quoted figures are more of a warning that steady point accumulation will probably not be enough to win the group: major results will also be needed against direct rivals. The percentages do not describe a finished story, but show the current situation. One good next round could quickly improve the picture, but at the moment Hungary are no longer among the favourites in the group, and the remaining four matches could carry major weight not only for promotion but also for later European Championship qualifying positions.
