999 HUF day ticket on 22 September: where it works

European Mobility Week is once again arriving this year with several discounts and city programmes. The most important point to know is that the 999 HUF Car-Free Day ticket does not cover all public transport in Hungary, but can be used on specified regional services. In addition, Budapest will hold a car-free weekend on 19 and 20 September, which may mean both a good programme and more significant transport changes.

When is the 999 HUF day ticket valid?

According to the MÁV Group notice and the information published on Kormány.hu, the Car-Free Day ticket can be purchased and used between 00:00 and 23:59 on 22 September 2026, at a price of 999 HUF. According to GYSEV's official statement, the discount will also be available on its lines on that day.

So this is not a week-long promotion, but an option valid for a single day only. The weekend events in Budapest and the nationwide discount on 22 September are separate in time, so it is best not to confuse them when planning your route.

Which services can the ticket be used on?

Based on the official MÁV Group notice, the 999 HUF day ticket is valid on regional services operated by MÁV, Volánbusz, HÉV and GYSEV. Its area of validity is the same as that of the Hungary24 day ticket.

The most important restriction is that the ticket cannot be used generally on local urban transport. In Budapest, for example, it is not valid on BKK services. The MÁV notice mentions the local services of Ercsi, Érd and Csongrád as exceptions.

In practice, this means that if, for example, someone from Budapest wanted to take a trip to a nearby or more distant town, they could use the discounted ticket well for the regional section, but they might still need a separate ticket for local buses or trams at the destination.

What should you watch out for if travelling by InterCity or with a bicycle?

The discounted day ticket does not in itself override the rules that are otherwise compulsory on certain services. Based on the MÁV Group notice, charges linked to compulsory seat reservations or supplementary services must still be purchased where these are separately required.

This may be especially important for InterCity services, and for any train where a seat reservation or another surcharge is compulsory. It is worth checking the conditions of the selected service before departure, because the 999 HUF ticket does not in every case cover the full cost of the journey.

There is good news for cyclists, however: according to information from MÁV Group and GYSEV, between 16 and 22 September bicycle transport will be free of charge on regional rail services. At the same time, where a bicycle reservation is compulsory, it must still be purchased.

Who could really benefit from this 999 HUF option?

The discount may be particularly useful for those who want to take an inexpensive day trip or link several settlements using regional public transport in a single day. On a longer rail or coach outing, the fixed price can be especially favourable compared with having to buy separate tickets for each section.

It could be a good choice, for example, for a one-day autumn trip, a family visit, or even a route where someone would combine rail and regional coach travel. The size of the saving naturally depends on where a person starts and how far they travel, but the flat fare makes planning simpler.

It is worth bearing in mind, however, that passenger traffic may be heavier on more popular routes. For that reason, it may be more comfortable to set off earlier and to check in advance whether a seat reservation or bicycle reservation is needed for the chosen service.

Car-free weekend in Budapest: when will there be closures?

According to BKK's official information, Budapest's car-free weekend will be held on 19 and 20 September 2026. Because of the event, Műegyetem rakpart, Szabadság híd, Vámház körút and Pesti alsó rakpart will be closed.

This will affect not only motorists, but also surface public transport. BKK points out that the operation of several services in the city centre may be modified on those two days, so it is worth checking the latest traffic information before travelling.

What is the best way to get around the capital?

According to BKK, during the car-free weekend, for travel in the city centre it is mainly worth considering the metro, as well as certain alternative surface services, including the 9 bus and the 72 trolleybus. In many cases, these diversions and replacement options may be more predictable than driving near the closed sections.

Anyone planning to head into the city centre by car may be better off thinking in advance about whether using the car is really necessary. The whole point of the weekend is to give more space to walking, cycling and public transport, so slower-than-usual car traffic can be expected.

It is not a bad programme either: it is not just about transport restrictions

The car-free weekend is not simply about road closures. According to a report by Csodálatos Budapest, various programmes are being prepared in the city centre, so the event may bring something of an urban festival atmosphere, not just traffic changes.

This may also appeal to people who would not otherwise travel farther, but would simply take a walk around the Danube area or try a calmer city-centre route with less car traffic. And anyone planning both the capital's programme and the discounted travel on 22 September could even put together a multi-day, car-free weekend.
