The search for the next James Bond has reached an important stage: according to several international film publications, final screen tests for the role are taking place in London. Most reports name Jack Lowden and Callum Turner as participants, while Josh O’Connor’s position is less clear.
Amazon MGM Studios has been far more cautious in its wording. According to Pear & Dean’s report, the studio merely said that the search for the next James Bond was under way, but declined to comment on the names of the actors auditioned. The list of candidates reported by the press therefore cannot yet be treated as an official announcement.
Lowden and Turner are named most consistently
According to The Guardian, Jack Lowden and Callum Turner have reached the final screen tests. The same publication reported that Jacob Elordi and Jack O’Connell, who frequently appeared in earlier speculation, are not among the actors currently being tested.
Lowden and Turner would bring different acting qualities to the role, but their previous performances do not provide a firm basis for determining what kind of Bond the filmmakers want. Whoever wins the role will need to portray the character’s physical presence, understated humour, social elegance and more dangerous side with equal credibility.
The casting decision may therefore not simply come down to whom audiences can most easily imagine in a suit or an action scene. It may also matter how well a candidate adapts to the tone set by the director and whether he can give the character a distinctive identity over the longer term.
Reports differ over Josh O’Connor’s involvement
IGN names Josh O’Connor among the finalists, while TheWrap has also reported that he is taking part in the final tests. These are press reports, however, rather than casting information confirmed by the studio.
The Playlist’s summary, meanwhile, noted that information from industry publications is inconsistent. Some reports include O’Connor among the candidates being tested, while others do not name him as a confirmed participant. His involvement should therefore be treated with greater caution than that of Lowden or Turner.
Moreover, the field of candidates may not be limited to the names made public. According to TheWrap, another unnamed actor may also be taking part in the final round. No reliably verifiable information about his identity has been published, however.
The screen tests may assess several abilities
According to The Guardian, the London tests focus on three main areas: action and stunt work, on-camera presence and dialogue scenes. This suggests that playing Bond involves more than simply looking convincing in elegant clothes.
The action tests may show how an actor moves, how physically credible he appears and how he performs under pressure. The camera test may reveal whether he can command a scene in close-up with little dialogue. In the dialogue sections, meanwhile, rhythm, humour and the ability to create tension may come to the fore.
Selecting the lead actor is also a major decision because the filmmakers are not merely looking for the face of a single film. The new Bond’s acting style could define the tone of the series for years, meaning the studio must find an actor suited to a new cinematic era.
Denis Villeneuve’s direction may signal a new approach
According to The Guardian’s report, Denis Villeneuve will direct the new film, while Steven Knight is working on the screenplay. This pairing alone does not reveal what the film will be like or what kind of personality the filmmakers envision for the new Bond.
Villeneuve’s involvement as director raises the possibility of a visually meticulous and tense film, but for now this is only an expectation based on his body of work, not the officially announced concept for the production. The action, humour, espionage story and charismatic lead traditionally associated with Bond films will all need to be reconciled with the new creative approach.
Knight’s involvement is also a significant creative choice, but it does not yet support any firm conclusions about the story’s tone. No details have been disclosed about the plot or the new protagonist’s personality that would make it possible to determine how far the film will depart from the Daniel Craig era.
The casting is part of a broader creative transition
According to TheWrap, Amazon MGM Studios has taken over creative control of the franchise, while Amy Pascal and David Heyman have become producers of the forthcoming film. The publication said this represents a change from the previous arrangement, under which the Broccoli family played a defining role in the series’ creative decisions.
The new creative structure provides an opportunity for the film not simply to continue the Daniel Craig era, but to rebuild Bond’s world on its own foundations. Craig’s successor does not necessarily need to follow his interpretation, since the change of lead can be fully justified only if the new actor finds his own voice and presence.
The reboot nevertheless requires a delicate balance. If the film adheres too closely to the previous formula, it may feel less fresh; but if it abandons every familiar element, it could lose the distinctive character of the Bond films. The choice of lead actor may therefore also indicate how the studio envisions the future of the series.
No name is official until the studio makes an announcement
Based on press reports, Lowden and Turner are the two candidates named most consistently, while industry publications differ in their assessments of O’Connor’s involvement. According to TheWrap, the presence of another participant who has not been publicly named cannot be ruled out either.
The decision may ultimately be determined not by popularity among fans, but by the filmmakers’ priorities and the candidates’ performances in the screen tests. Until Amazon MGM Studios names the selected actor, none of the candidates can be regarded as Daniel Craig’s official successor. Together with Villeneuve’s direction and the changed creative leadership, however, the outcome of the casting process may define the next era of the 007 series.
