Revolut outage: what to do if payments fail

Some Revolut services were disrupted again on 20 October 2026. According to The Irish Times, the disruption also affected users in Ireland and was linked to a wider cloud infrastructure outage. Such a fault does not necessarily disable every function at once, so the first step is to determine whether the app, card purchases, transfers or currency exchange are affected.

Not every October disruption had the same cause

It is important to distinguish between a more extensive service outage and a card settlement problem. According to Portfolio's 12 October article, earlier card purchases were reversed for some Hungarian customers, and the amounts were temporarily returned to their accounts.

According to Revolut's information reported by Portfolio, this was caused not by an internal system failure but by an automated safeguard in the global card settlement process after debit requests arrived late. This matters because money reappearing in an account does not necessarily represent a permanent credit: the settlement process may be completed later.

By contrast, The Irish Times reported that the disruption to Revolut's services on 20 October was linked to a wider Google Cloud outage. The reports therefore concern two different issues: one affected the settlement of card transactions, while the other affected the technical infrastructure behind the service.

First check the extent of the problem

If the app does not load or a payment fails, this does not necessarily mean the entire service is down. Only one function may be affected while other operations remain available. Revolut's official system status page lists the main service areas separately, making it possible to check whether the company has reported a disruption.

An external monitoring site may provide additional guidance. The StatusGator Revolut page summarises system status and detected incidents, but as an external aggregator it does not replace information from the service provider. Social media posts may also indicate that others are experiencing problems, but they do not in themselves confirm either the cause or the likely duration of the issue.

It is also worth determining whether there is a central outage or a local problem preventing access. Switching between mobile data and Wi-Fi, restarting the app and checking for available updates can help rule out some device or connection issues. However, deleting and reinstalling the app during an outage may not be advisable, as it could require users to sign in and verify their identity again.

What should you do if a card payment fails?

If a terminal declines a payment, it is best not to repeat the same transaction many times in quick succession. Some attempts that appear unsuccessful may still be pending, which could later result in confusing charges. It is safer to choose another payment method and then review the transaction history once the service has been restored.

It is worth keeping merchant receipts and screenshots of error messages. These can help if it later becomes necessary to establish whether a charge was made, a transaction was reversed or the same amount was genuinely charged twice. Any unknown or disputed charge should be reported through the appropriate customer support section of the app as soon as it becomes accessible.

If the amount of an earlier purchase unexpectedly returns to the account balance, it should not automatically be treated as extra money available to spend. The incident in mid-October showed that an interruption to the settlement process can also result in a temporary credit. Until the transaction's final status has been confirmed, it is advisable to leave enough money in the account to ensure that a later charge does not cause problems.

A backup payment method is not a luxury

Relying on a single banking app or card is convenient, but it can leave users vulnerable during an outage. One practical option is to carry a physical bank card from another financial service provider. It is important for this to be a genuinely separate backup: a second card linked to the same account may not work if the account or processing system itself is affected.

A small amount of cash can also be useful when digital payments are temporarily unavailable. The appropriate amount depends on individual circumstances, so there is no rule that applies to everyone. The aim is not to build up a large cash reserve, but to ensure that essential expenses can still be covered during a short disruption.

Before travelling, it is particularly important to check whether another card is available and whether it can be used in the destination country. Paying for accommodation, fuel, local transport or a deposit can become difficult if the system behind the only available payment method goes down. Fees for bank cards, transfers and cash use may vary by provider, so current charges should always be checked against the terms of the relevant account and card.

Why is a digital financial service vulnerable?

Digital banking depends on several interconnected systems working together. The app, the provider's own back-end systems, cloud infrastructure, the card network, the merchant's acquiring bank and the internet connection may all form part of a transaction's journey. If any important link in this chain fails, the visible result for the customer may be the same: the app does not open or the payment fails.

This risk is not unique to neobanks, but it may be more noticeable with services that operate primarily through an app. If access, account management and payment functions are all provided through a single digital interface, a technical problem can restrict several options at once. This is why user preparedness is at least as important as understanding what caused a particular incident.

How to reduce the impact of the next disruption

  • Keep a separate backup card: ideally, it should be linked to an account held with another provider.
  • Keep some cash available: enough to cover essential short-term expenses.
  • Do not keep all your money in one account: separating funds for daily spending from reserves can reduce the risk of losing access.
  • Do not keep trying indefinitely after a failed payment: first check the transaction status and retain the receipt.
  • Follow official updates: social media posts may be quick, but the provider's statements are the authoritative source on the cause and restoration of the service.

The main lesson is not that digital financial services should be avoided. Rather, no single app or card can be assumed to be available in every situation. A separate bank card, a little cash and careful checks of transactions can prevent many problems when banking services are temporarily disrupted.
