John Wick Animated Prequel Brings Back Keanu Reeves

One of the most important events in the John Wick universe, previously known only through stories, will take centre stage. According to TheWrap, Lionsgate has greenlit a feature-length animated prequel in which Keanu Reeves will once again play John Wick — this time with his voice.

The upcoming film will depict the ‘impossible task’ completed in a single night that cleared the way for John to leave his life as an assassin. According to IGN, the lead character took on the task so that he could start a new life with Helen.

The ‘impossible task’ finally gets its own story

In the John Wick films, the lead character’s past has always remained partly mysterious. Viewers learnt that he had earned an extraordinary reputation in the criminal underworld and was able to retire after completing an almost impossible task. Until now, however, the mission itself has functioned more as a myth than as an event shown in detail.

Based on reports from TheWrap and IGN, the animated prequel will fill in this missing chapter. The story takes place before the events of the first live-action film and focuses on how John tried to secure his exit from the criminal world in a single night. This could directly connect the franchise’s spectacular action with the lead character’s personal motivation.

The stakes of the mission therefore go beyond mere survival or completing an assignment. For John, it represented the chance to live a different kind of life with Helen. The prequel could therefore also show what the legendary assassin wanted to leave behind.

Keanu Reeves returns as both voice actor and producer

According to The Independent, Keanu Reeves has agreed to return. The actor will voice John Wick, while TheWrap also reports that he will be involved in making the film as a producer.

Reeves’s involvement matters because, despite the switch to animation, the lead character’s most recognisable cinematic identity can be preserved. John Wick is a man of few words, so tone of voice, pauses and understated delivery may be especially important. The actor’s presence could provide a link between the live-action films and the new format.

According to the reports, Reeves will not merely perform in the story but will also take part in the creative process as a producer. The exact details have not yet been disclosed, so it is still impossible to say how much influence he will have over the film’s creative direction.

Animation offers a way to portray a younger John Wick

One obvious challenge for the prequel is the need to portray a younger John Wick. IGN argues that animation makes this possible without digital de-ageing. It also means the older actor does not need to take on the full physical demands of live-action stunt work.

This is not solely a practical advantage, however. Animation can offer visual approaches to movement, speed, perspective and space that differ from those of the live-action films. The precisely choreographed fights of the John Wick series could therefore appear in a form that does not simply copy the visual style of the earlier instalments.

The format could also allow the film to give greater emphasis to the legend surrounding the lead character. Even at the beginning of the series, figures in the criminal underworld described John Wick as an extraordinary threat. Stylised animation may make it easier to reconcile this mythical perspective with the franchise’s physically demanding, grounded action.

Shannon Tindle directs, with Ryan and Kaz Firpo writing

According to TheWrap, the director is Shannon Tindle, also known as the creator of Ultraman: Rising, while Ryan and Kaz Firpo are writing the screenplay. IGN’s report names the same creative team.

The choice of director may suggest that Lionsgate is approaching the project as a standalone animated film rather than simply a drawn imitation of the live-action instalments. However, no details have yet been released about the visual style, animation technique or the specific studio handling production.

World of Reel reports that Vanessa Taylor was previously linked to the screenplay before the assignment later went to the Firpo duo. As this detail has not been confirmed by other outlets reporting on the announcement, only the involvement of the currently named writing team can be stated with certainty.

Anime has influenced the series from the beginning

The change of medium may initially seem like a major departure, but it fits the stylised look of the John Wick films. According to JoBlo, Chad Stahelski previously said that anime and animation had influenced the franchise from the outset. From this perspective, the new film is not a break with the series but a more direct use of an earlier source of inspiration.

The series’ action scenes have always relied heavily on clear use of space, rhythm and carefully constructed sequences of movement. In animation, these elements are less constrained by real locations and the limitations of physical filming. Even so, a key question remains whether the filmmakers will preserve the weight of punches and falls, one of the defining features of the live-action films.

Animation therefore offers greater freedom while also creating new expectations. Alongside spectacular sequences, it may be important for the action to retain the John Wick universe’s consistent combat logic. Expanding the lead character’s backstory can truly work if the human motivation is preserved alongside the visual experimentation.

When will the animated John Wick film be released?

A release date for the film has not yet been announced. On 5 November 2026, TheWrap reported on the announcement linked to Lionsgate’s quarterly financial results, while Cosmic Book News reported that the project was in pre-production. It is therefore not yet possible to make a reliable estimate of when it might reach audiences.

The official age rating is also unknown. Although the violent action of the John Wick films may invite speculation, animation alone does not determine the age group for which the production is intended. Only a later official classification can provide reliable information on this.

For now, the most important element of the announcement is the choice of story: the filmmakers are not adapting a minor episode but a defining turning point in John Wick’s life. Keanu Reeves’s return could provide continuity, while animation offers an opportunity to present the younger lead character and the legendary one-night mission in a new visual language.
